Letter from the Provost
Dear Faculty Colleagues,
Welcome to the Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions Faculty Handbook.
On behalf of the academic leadership of the University, I am pleased to welcome you to our community of educators, scholars, clinicians, researchers, and academic leaders. Your contributions are central to fulfilling the University’s mission of preparing health professionals who will lead, innovate, and transform health care for the benefit of patients, communities, and society.
The publication of this handbook marks an important moment in our institution’s history. Effective September 1, 2026, the MGH Institute of Health Professions becomes the Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions. Our new name reflects who we have become, the health care system of which we are an integral part, and the future we are building together.
Since our founding in 1977 by visionary leaders at Massachusetts General Hospital, our institution has been dedicated to advancing excellence in health professions education. Over nearly five decades, we have grown from a small graduate institution into a comprehensive health professions university offering undergraduate, graduate, clinical, and research programs across multiple disciplines. As the only degree-granting member of Mass General Brigham, we are uniquely positioned to connect education, clinical practice, research, and innovation within one of the nation’s leading health care systems.
Although our name and institutional status are changing, the values that have guided us throughout our history remain constant. We continue to build on our legacy through outstanding teaching, impactful scholarship, meaningful community engagement, and a steadfast commitment to interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Our identity as a comprehensive university strengthens our ability to advance these priorities, expand opportunities for our students and faculty, and respond to the evolving needs of health care and the communities we serve.
Our faculty are the foundation of the University’s success. Through your expertise and dedication, you create learning environments that challenge, inspire, and prepare students to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse society. Whether in the classroom, laboratory, simulation center, clinic, community, or online environment, your work shapes the next generation of health care professionals and advances the knowledge and practices that improve health outcomes.
