3.2 Alignment of HLA Competency Domains
The HA program at the Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions is grounded in two complementary competency frameworks: the Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) Competency Model and the Mission, Values, and Community Excellence (MVCE) Competency Model. Together, they ensure our curriculum not only develops technical and leadership capabilities but also reflects the Institute’s commitment to equity, professionalism, and lifelong learning. It is expected to have both competency models outlined in your course syllabus.
Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) Competency Model
The HLA Competency Model was created through a global consortium of healthcare professional organizations to establish universally recognized standards for healthcare leadership and management. The model identifies five core domains that every healthcare leader should demonstrate:
- Leadership – Inspiring excellence, managing change, and creating a shared vision.
- Communication and Relationship Management – Building constructive relationships and communicating effectively.
- Professionalism and Social Responsibility – Acting ethically, with a commitment to lifelong learning and improvement.
- Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment – Understanding healthcare systems, policy, and organizational context.
- Business Skills and Knowledge – Applying financial, human resource, and strategic management principles to healthcare.
Why it matters: Mapping our learning objectives to the HLA model ensures students graduate with competencies validated by leading professional associations, preparing them for national and global leadership roles.
