c. Nonrenewal

A decision not to renew a faculty appointment may occur following review through the annual faculty evaluation and reappointment process.

A faculty member who is not recommended for reappointment shall be informed of the recommendation by the academic unit leader. Recommendations for nonrenewal shall include:

  • Written rationale supporting the recommendation; and
  • Confirmation that the recommendation has been reviewed with the faculty member.

The Office of the Provost shall communicate final nonrenewal decisions in writing, including the end date of the appointment period.

The decision not to reappoint a faculty member is not subject to the University's problem resolution process described in Section VIII.

Except as otherwise noted below, faculty members shall receive written notice of nonrenewal no later than September 30 of the terminal year of the appointment.

Initial One-Year Appointments

For faculty hired on an initial one-year appointment, the University reserves the right not to renew the appointment. In such cases, the faculty member will receive at least thirty (30) days notice of nonrenewal during the first year of service.

Faculty Supported by Extramural Funding

Faculty appointments supported in whole or in part through grants, contracts, or other extramural funding sources are contingent upon the continuation of sufficient funding. Reduction, expiration, nonrenewal, or loss of such funding may result in nonrenewal of the faculty appointment.

Faculty members supported through extramural funding shall be informed of their reappointment or nonrenewal status by the dean or academic unit leader at least ninety (90) days prior to the appointment end date, whenever practicable.
