1 - Introduction
Welcome to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) at the Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions (the University). The University is the degree-granting affiliate of the Massachusetts General Brigham Health Care System which includes Mass Eye and Ear Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network and others. The University is an independent, interprofessional graduate school of Health Sciences that prepares professionals and scientists to advance care for a diverse society through leadership in education, clinical practice, research, and community engagement.
1.1 Vision and Mission of the Doctor of Audiology Program
The vision of the Doctor of Audiology program is to train high-quality healthcare professionals to do good work anywhere in the world.
The mission of the Doctor of Audiology program is to prepare healthcare professionals for best practice and treatment in hearing and balance disorders through solid, foundational education and excellent training with local, national and international partners.
1.2 Purpose of this Handbook
The purpose of this handbook is to present the requirements for the AuD graduate degree. Detailed descriptions are provided for the academic and clinical requirements that must be met to satisfactorily complete the AuD degree. Students must complete the requirements specified for the degree at the time of initial enrollment. These requirements are expected to evolve as the curriculum is updated to meet the expectations of the profession.
While this program handbook is specific to the cohort of students entering in June 2025, the academic standards and policies of the AuD program are contained in a separate handbook which can be viewed on the University’s website https://mghihp.smartcatalogiq.com/en/current/handbooks-and-handbooks-current-and-archived/. Students are required to familiarize themselves with, and adhere to, the academic requirements, standards, and policies contained in both handbooks.
If questions or concerns arise that are not addressed in either of these resources, the student should consult the University Catalog https://mghihp.smartcatalogiq.com/en/current/catalog/, their academic advisor, or the Program Director. Ultimately however, it is the student’s responsibility to be informed about all academic and clinical requirements for the AuD program at the University.
1.3 Accreditation Status
The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree at the University is a 3-year, 9-semester program that integrates academic coursework with practical clinical experience across the spectrum of audiologic specialties and environments. The AuD curriculum provides a strong scientific and clinical foundation that prepares graduates with the requisite training for evidence-based clinical practice. Successful students will meet the requirements for certification in Audiology by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and for licensure within the state of Massachusetts and other states in the U.S.
As of 2025, the Doctor of Audiology (AuD) education program in audiology (residential) at the Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions is a Candidate for Accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700. Candidacy is a “preaccreditation” status with the CAA, awarded to developing or emerging programs for a maximum period of 5 years.
