5 - Program of Study Constraints
5.1 Transfer Policy
Students may transfer a maximum of twelve (12) credit hours of graduate-level AuD coursework if the courses were completed at a CAA accredited AuD program and the student obtained a grade of B- or better in each course transferred. To be eligible for transfer of credits, the courses must have been taken at the graduate level, the Program Director and AuD faculty must approve the transfer, and the courses must NOT have been taken as part of another degree requirement.
The student should speak with their Academic Advisor first to determine if a course can be transferred. Students must provide course syllabi, transcripts, and any other requested documentation with their Petition for Course Replacement form (http://www.mghihp.edu/petition-course-replacement-form). Transfer credits are not calculated into the graduate GPA. On the recommendation of faculty, the advisor may also require that the student attend (without having to register for the course) the equivalent Mass General Brigham University of Health Professions AuD course even though transfer credit for a similar course taken elsewhere was awarded.
Students may also transfer up to 150 hours of supervised clinical experience (not observation) if the hours were supervised by audiologists holding the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech Language Hearing Association, the training was provided within a graduate-level AuD program, and the student received a grade of B- or better (or pass in a pass/fail grading system). The student must provide a record of the clock hours and grades verified by the AuD Clinical Director of the accredited program.
5.2 Credit by Examination
Matriculating students may not receive credit by examination for required or elective courses.
5.3 Automatic Withdrawal
Students presenting excessive absenteeism in all courses in any single semester within an academic year (Summer/Fall/Spring) will be withdrawn automatically from the program.
5.4 Time Limits
Students must complete all degree requirements within five consecutive academic years from the time of initial registration.
5.5 Request for Extension
Students wishing to extend the 3-year time-limit for the program may request an extension by contacting their academic advisor and providing a written petition. The petition will be considered for approval by the AuD faculty. A majority vote by the faculty is required for extension approval. Students should work with their academic advisor to develop a revised course of study. See the AuD Academic Standards and Policies Handbook for details regarding the petition process. The student’s advisor will provide written communication to the student regarding their decision and a copy of the petition, written communication, and extended program of study will be placed in the student’s academic file.
5.6 Required Technology and Communication
Personal Computer
All students are required to have their own laptop computers with operating systems compatible with university requirements. All use of laptops during class periods should be related to in-class activities. Excessive non-academic use during class is considered a violation of professional behavior standards and may be subject to disciplinary action by the department.
Learning Management System
The learning management system at the University is D2L Brightspace. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor all calendar events and announcements posted in D2L.
Email
Each student is assigned a university specific email address. Students should use this email address for all communication with faculty and staff at the University. Also, students should expect to check this email address frequently; we suggest doing so daily.
5.7 Student Organizations (NSSLHA/SAA)
Two student organization are available to AuD students.
Student Association of Audiology (SAA) The Student Academy of Audiology at University is the local chapter of the national American Academy of Audiology. SAA advances the rights and interests of students pursuing audiology. SAA introduces students to lifelong involvement in promoting and advancing audiology services, information, education, representation, and advocacy in the field. The national SAA has over 2,000 members including AuD, PhD, and undergraduate students. Members receive SAA resources including audiology related seminars and externship resources, and much more.
National and local Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) Members receive access to ASHA journals, are eligible for scholarships and fellowships, and receive ASHA certification at a reduced rate after graduation. Because two years of continuous NSSLHA enrollment are required for students to take full advantage of all the ASHA benefits upon graduation, AuD students are encouraged to join NSSLHA during their first semester of graduate study.
