ii. Reappointment Process
In April of each academic year, the Office of the Provost will notify academic unit leaders of faculty members whose reappointment decisions are due during the upcoming faculty evaluation period.
During the annual faculty evaluation process, faculty members are encouraged to request feedback from their academic unit leader regarding progress toward reappointment to ensure awareness of any concerns and opportunities for improvement.
Recommendations for reappointment occur during the annual faculty evaluation period. Formative feedback exchanged throughout the evaluation process, together with information from annual reviews and, where applicable, promotion processes, are expected to contribute to a meaningful assessment of academic productivity, performance, and professional growth.
Academic unit leaders may seek input from additional sources when considering recommendations for reappointment. Any additional evaluation measures established by schools or academic units should not create an unreasonable burden for faculty members.
By September 1 of the terminal year of the appointment, the academic unit leader shall submit a recommendation to the Provost regarding reappointment.
When recommending reappointment, the academic unit leader shall:
- Indicate the proposed renewal term in years; and
- Confirm that sufficient resources exist to support the faculty position. For faculty positions supported in whole or in part through extramural funding, confirm that sufficient funding is reasonably anticipated to support the proposed term of reappointment.
Upon receipt of the recommendation, the Office of the Provost shall:
- Approve or deny recommendations for reappointment; and
- Communicate reappointment decisions in writing to the faculty member. Reappointments exceeding three years and up to five years remain contingent upon final approval by the Board of Trustees.
