b. Scope of Review
A matter may be considered under this policy only when it meets all the following criteria.
- The faculty member must allege that a material adverse professional action has occurred. Such actions are limited to those that substantially affect the faculty member’s role or status within the University. Examples may include suspension, reduction in rank, formal disciplinary action beyond routine counseling, or a reassignment or removal of core duties that materially alter the faculty member’s responsibilities. The withdrawal of a faculty role or privilege may also fall within this category.
- The concern must be grounded in an allegation that the action materially violated a written University policy or procedure, or that it was inconsistent with University policies and standards governing academic freedom. Disagreement with the outcome of a decision, absent a violation of policy or academic standards, is not sufficient to warrant review under this process.
- The matter must not be more appropriately addressed through another University or Mass General Brigham policy, office, or process. Certain concerns (such as those involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, workplace misconduct, research compliance, or other matters governed by state or federal law or health system policy) are required to be addressed through designated University or Mass General Brigham processes and are not reviewed under this policy.
