Early Termination Due to Performance or Professional Behavior
Students are expected to adhere to all safety guidelines and policies and procedures of the fieldwork site in which the fieldwork education experience takes place. Failure to do so may result in dismissal of the fieldwork experience and a grade of “F” for that fieldwork course.
Failure of a fieldwork experience is considered failure in a professional course and is associated with all actions and penalties that may occur with any failure of a professional course. Failure of a Level II fieldwork placement will result in the need to repeat the course, requiring the student to register and pay an additional 6.0 credits. Any repeat fieldwork placement is scheduled based on the availability of fieldwork sites and may result in a delay in the program’s progression, which may also impact the student’s financial aid.
A fieldwork placement may be terminated prior to successful completion if a student demonstrates behavior that is inconsistent with professional standards or if the fieldwork site determines that the student is unlikely to meet the required performance expectations necessary to pass the placement.
In such cases, the fieldwork site will notify the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC), and termination will be coordinated between the site and the academic program. The AFWC may also initiate withdrawal from a placement if a student’s performance, progress, or professional behavior does not support successful completion.
Early termination of a fieldwork placement, whether initiated by the fieldwork site or the academic program, results in a failing grade for the course.
The determination of failure is made by clinical site coordinator and/or fieldwork educator, in consultation with the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC), and is informed by available documentation, which may include the Fieldwork Performance Evaluation (FWPE), narrative feedback from the fieldwork educator, and other relevant documentation of student performance and professional behavior. While student perspective will be reviewed as part of the academic process, it does not alter the outcome of a failed placement.
