4.3 Patient Safety and Privacy

Patient safety and privacy are central responsibilities in all behavioral health settings and are closely connected to professional appearance and conduct. Students must dress and behave in ways that support safety, trust, and confidentiality.

In clinical and fieldwork settings, students are expected to:

  • Wear clothing and footwear that allow safe movement, reduce risk of injury, and support infection control as required by the site
  • Avoid accessories, jewelry, or personal items that could pose safety risks or interfere with client care
  • Ensure identification badges are worn as required and are visible when on site
  • Protect client privacy by avoiding visible display of confidential information (including notes, screens, or paperwork)
  • Comply with all clinical site rules, policies, and procedures to ensure safe, effective, person-centered care as well as quality and patient privacy
  • Refrain from using personal electronic devices for non-work purposes in clinical areas

Students must also follow all site-specific policies related to HIPAA, confidentiality, photography, and electronic communication. Taking photos, recording audio or video, or sharing information from clinical settings (whether in person, online, or on social media) is strictly prohibited unless explicitly authorized by the site and faculty.

Questions about safety, privacy, or appropriate conduct should be raised promptly with faculty or site supervisors. These expectations are part of professional practice and are reinforced throughout the program.
