5.2.6 Physical, Sensory, and Environmental Participation

Although the program does not require advanced athletic or physical performance abilities, students must possess sufficient physical, sensory, and motor abilities to participate safely and effectively in educational, community, and fieldwork environments.

Students must be able to:

  • Attend and participate in classroom, simulation, online, community, and fieldwork activities
  • Navigate typical educational, healthcare, and community environments safely
  • Maintain balance, mobility, and physical stamina sufficient for participation in learning and fieldwork activities
  • Stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, or move for extended periods as required in classroom, community, or fieldwork settings
  • Participate in field trips, community visits, and clinical learning experiences that may require movement across varied environments
  • Safely assist with routine supportive activities, which may include repositioning, guiding, or assisting individuals with mobility under appropriate supervision and within the scope of training
  • Use computers, communication systems, and required educational technology
  • Respond appropriately and safely during urgent, crisis, or emergency situations

Students must also possess sufficient sensory abilities to:

  • Observe and recognize environmental hazards and behavioral cues
  • Read written materials, electronic information, and documentation
  • Hear and respond appropriately to verbal communication, alarms, and safety instructions
  • Participate safely in environments involving multiple simultaneous stimuli or distractions

Some fieldwork environments may require students to remain attentive and engaged for extended periods, travel between locations, or respond appropriately during behavioral health emergencies or crisis situations.
